October 14, 2010 – Gen. Charles Yeager was the guest of honor in Sort, Spain, for a celebration of the 63rd anniversary of breaking the sound barrier. Chuck Yeager’s historic Mach 1 flight and distinguished aeronautical career would not have been possible if he had not been able to evade capture by the Nazi’s in France and escape over the Pyrenees mountains to Sort, Spain, after being shot down on a bombing mission to Bordeaux on March 5, 1944. Below are photo’s from the celebration and a video of the day’s events, including Gen. Yeager’s acceptance remarks. Gen. Yeager said, “I want to thank all of the people in Spain. Without their help I would not be here today. I’ve always had wonderful feelings toward the Spanish people.”
